Harold and Kumar go to Fire Academy
Actually, it wasn't Harold and Kumar. It was chapter members Jurey Howard and Johnny McFarland. They attended the Prescribed Burn School at the Tennessee Fire Academy in beautiful Bell Buckle Tennessee. The two day school covers weather observation, weather requirements, burn plan preparation, fire behavior, and burn plan requirements, among other information necessary to become a certified burn manager in Tennessee. Johnny and Jurey were joined by several members of the Quail Forever Kentucky Lake Chapter, in addition to TWRA, NRCS, and TDF attendees.
While a great deal of the program was classroom oriented, attendees did have a field exercise involving evaluating several properties for a potential burn, and actually did conduct a prescribed burn on a three acre field at the academy. The sixty degree wind shift added a level of excitement to the burn, and was a great teaching opportunity for all students involved.
Many of the attendees visited the Tennessee Fallen Firefighter Memorial. It is a beautiful memorial on the grounds of the academy to recognize those who have paid the ultimate price for our safety. The mission of the Tennessee Prescribed Fire Council (T.N.P.F.C.) is to foster cooperation among all parties involved with prescribed fire in Tennessee, to promote appropriate use of prescribed fire by encouraging the exchange of information, techniques, and experiences among prescribed fire practitioners; and by promoting public understanding of the importance, benefits, and complexities of prescribed fire.
Quail Forever is dedicated to the management and restoration of habitat for Pheasants, Quail and other upland game species.
